Game Time:
Saturday, October 12th at 8:30 PM (Mountain) on CBS Sports Network
The History:
These MWC teams have met 37 times. Wyoming is 19-18 against San Diego State. The teams last met in the 2016 Mountain West Conference Championship game. The Aztecs won the game (and conference) in Laramie, 27 to 24.
The Matchup:
This game should be a pretty even matchup.
Both teams like to run the ball. San Diego State has the #1 ranked rushing defense in the country. Wyoming has the 14th ranked rushing offense. On the other side of the ball, Wyoming has the 10th ranked ranked rushing defense while San Diego State has the 94th ranked rushing offense. It has been a down year for the Aztecs running attack so far.
Neither team is known for their passing game. San Diego State ranks 110th in passing offense. Wyoming is particularly woeful in the passing game, ranking 128th (behind Navy) in passing offense. Wyoming ranks 127th in passing defense, ranking among the worst teams in FBS. San Diego State ranks 70th in passing defense.
In an evenly matched game, turnovers could decide the game. Wyoming is tied for 3rd in the country with +8 turnover margin. One of those teams Wyoming is tied with is San Diego State.
The Outcome:
The spread has the Aztecs by 3.5. Seems reasonable to favor the home team in what should be a good game. It will be interesting to see what matchup decides the game. Will San Diego State throw the ball more than normal and take advantage of a suspect Cowboys secondary? Will Wyoming be able to run the ball against San Diego State? Who wins the turnover battle? I think Wyoming will be ready to play coming off their bye, and I’ll say the Cowboys steal a close win on the road.
Wyoming 16, San Diego State 13
