Another week close to Signing Day, and the commitments are pouring in. At the time of this writing, there were 11 known commitments to Mountain West schools. Teams took advantage of one of the last weekends to host official visits and a week of conducting in-home visits. Two teams lead the way this week with three commitments each, Utah State and Boise State. However, the nod for the cover photo was given to Boise State for nabbing two highly-rated recruits and also securing a commitment in a big area of need.
Commitment Spotlight
JUCO DB Chad Mac Earle (San Jose State)
“The highlight of my visit was the love the coaches showed me and my family. It was like we was already part of the family. Likewise, the main reason I committed was because it felt like home. I love what Coach Brennan and the staff are trying to accomplish at San Jose State. They are all about me finishing up and getting my degree that’s a major part. My relationship with the coaches are awesome. We are like a big family. Since day one the coaches never sugarcoated anything with me. I wouldn’t want to be coached by any other group of great coaches. Coming into the season, their plan is for me is to be a leader in the secondary. With my size and physicality, we’ll be able to run a lot of packages. I have rare height for a corner, along with leadership skills and am willing to help out in run support. I play physical with speed.”
DB Dom Tatum (Utah State)
“As soon as I step foot into Logan I felt like I was at home it’s really special up there what I liked out there was they made me feel like I was family. They made me feel like family by how the players and coaches get along and how the coaches care about there players. The coaches Said I’m a versatile player that can play safety, corner, or nickel so I will be used a lot in these three positions which they like about me and the ability to come to school early.”
K/P Gavin Wale (Boise State)
“Since my Cousin Sean committed in 2012 Boise has been my dream school. Everything I’ve done since then has lead to this commitment. I’ve been competing at their camp since sophomore year and have been nonstop talking to them since my junior year. There was no real offer until Saturday afternoon. I believe I committed no more than 3 seconds afterward. Coach Harsin said it may be a record time from offer to commitment at dinner. The coaches said they look for guys who truly want to be there and buy into everything they’re doing. My longtime interest in the program showed them that. They like my athletic ability and the fact that once I step on campus I’m ready to compete. The competitive environment will be good for making sure Boise State specialists are the best they can be. I believe I’m just going to have to compete and try to win a job on the field.”
DE Liloa Kapiko (San Diego State)
“I actually wanted to commit right after my trip but I was thinking about taking a visit to Utah State so I waited. That visit ended up not happening but it didn’t matter, because I knew that was the school I wanted to go to anyways. Coach McGary also had a big role into me committing. He came down to Hawaii to see me more than any other school did. Which made me realize that they really wanted me to go to San Diego State. Also on my visit all the coaches seemed real cool and they all kept it real with me. I did want to sign early but since I didn’t know if I was going to take the other visit, I wasn’t able to. The coaches said they really like my length and my speed, because they drop their D linemen back in coverage and that’s what they want me to do. One downside though is my weight but I can pick that up, that’s what I’ll be working on alot, and keep my speed before I get there.”
