Legendary football coach Vince Lombardi may have been on to something when he uttered his now infamous phrase; “What the h*** is going on out here?” Fans of the New Mexico Lobos men’s basketball team have to be saying the same phrase.
The Lobos lost their third consecutive game on Tuesday night, falling 97-77 to San Diego State. Insert Lombardi’s phrase. All three losses have been by double digits; by 11 to UNLV, 15 to Colorado State, and now Tuesday’s debacle. Insert Lombardi’s phrase.
The Lobos had four players in double figures, led by Anthony Mathis’ 21 points.
So, where did the Lobos go wrong? Where they have all season; defensively. The Lobos allowed 90-plus points for the second straight game, and gave 53 in the second half alone.
Jalen McDaniels had 24 points for the Aztecs, and Devin Watson poured in 21 points.
For the Lobos they are now 8-9 overall, and 2-3 in the Mountain West. And after last night the prospect of a prosperous season appears to be dwindling away. However, there is hope to n the horizon with a visit from Wyoming coming Saturday at The Pit. As of this writing the Cowboys are 4-13 on the season. As loss there and Lobo fans will be using Lombardi’s phrase even more.
