Mountain West Connection Bracketology: Week Two

The leader rights the ship and moves up

NCAA Basketball: Nevada at Fresno State Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

The second week of Mountain West play is behind us, and Nevada recovered from their stunning loss to New Mexico with a convincing win over San Jose State and an impressive victory over Fresno State. Nevada continues to gather an impressive resume for the selection committee. Utah State and Fresno State are probably the only two teams, outside of Nevada, that have a chance of making a tournament. The conference may need another shocker in the conference tournament. Also, what has happened to San Diego State basketball? This is a bit of a surprise, since the program was once considered the class of the Mountain West. Let’s take a look at the teams in the Mountain West that have a shot at playing in the postseason.

Nevada: Even after the loss to the Lobos, it was hard to envision anyone other than the Wolf Pack winning the conference. That continues to be the case after Nevada came away with two impressive victories this week. Nevada will head to Boise on Tuesday to take on a resurgent Bronco squad. Right now, I am projecting Nevada to play in the West region as a three seed.

Fresno State: The Bulldog squad has been impressive in recent weeks; they had a respectable showing against Nevada on Tuesday and are currently a fringe tournament team. I think they are probably a 50/50 tournament team. I currently see them as one of the last four in and headed to Dayton as a twelve seed.

Utah State: The Aggies lost a thriller to the Bulldogs on Wednesday; that is why I gave the Bulldogs a spot in the tournament. I think the Aggies have a chance to earn that spot if they can rebound during the remainder of the conference schedule and have an impressive run in the conference tournament. Right now, I see the Aggies headed to the NIT as a three seed.

Are there any other teams that have a shot to reach the postseason? What are your thoughts?
