5 things we learned from the SDSU win over ASU

NCAA Football: Arizona State at San Diego State Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

San Diego State moves to 2-1 on the season with a 28 - 21 victory over Arizona State on Saturday night. Juwan Washington and Chase Jasmin both had over 100 yards and touchdown each and the defense only allowed 37 rushing yards. So without further delay here are some of the big takeaways from the game.

1 - The run game is the real deal. Together Washington and Jasmine took almost 50 carries so there was a large sample size the judge the run game and it was impressive. On the touchdown Juwan Washington scored he wasn’t just untouched but Issac Lessard and Ryan Pope were still downfield looking for more people to block. The run game also allowed for a 6 minute drive in the fourth quarter that killed the clock and completely swung the momentum to SDSU. Oh and as a cherry on top of all this Ryan Agnew ran for 36 yards.

2 - Sticking with the run game theme the SDSU defense is on straight fire this season when it comes to shutting down the run game. Including the 37 yards given up vs ASU the Aztecs have allowed a total of 150 yards in the first 3 games, and that has included some of the best RB’s and mobile QB’s that the Pac 12 has to offer. This could the makings of one of the best run defenses in all of college football.

3 - A small of dose of realism is needed on the defensive side because Manny Wilkins still threw for 341 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Complete domination of the run game and pressure on the quarterback can only help so much before the continual deep threats from the passing game make all of

4 - Speaking of passing Ryan Agnew looked pretty good in the pocket for the Aztecs. 12 / 24 passing for 129 yards and touchdown looks nice when you have a great run game and he looked confident in hitting a small window to Tim Wilson Jr for a score to cap off a nice 2 minute drive. No need to jump ahead and start making projections for his ceiling but this alleviate any concerns about the quarterback play dropping off while Christian Chapman is out.

5 - John Baron made a pair of field goals and given the large number of huge kicks (both made and missed) that happened in both college and pro football this weekend lets just take a second to appreciate the reliability of Baron and the SDSU special teams, you guys rock.

The Aztecs are back at it Saturday at home vs Eastern Michigan.
