It’s Thursday, and you know what that means: college football is back for Week 3. Yeah, the weekday games aren’t headline-grabbers, but football is football. Here are some links for news from around the Mountain West.
UNM’s new QB eager to face NMSU
With Tevaka Tuioti sidelined with a concussion, former superstar recruit Sheriron Jones will start for the Lobos against rival New Mexico State. Jones initially committed to play football at Colorado, but ended up at Tennessee instead. That didn’t work out, so he took the junior college route and is now with the Lobos. Can he play well enough to pry the job away from Tuioti?
Warrior Beat: Warriors head east
It’s not often the island-based Warriors are on the East Coast, and especially not during a week of such importance with the 17th anniversary of 9/11 on this past Tuesday. Hawaii plays Army on Saturday morning looking to become an astounding 4-0 to start the season.
Boise State football: Unfolding the Broncos’ Swiss Army knife
Former 4-star wideout/running back Khalil Shakir came to Boise State with high expectations following him. On Saturday vs. UConn, he gave fans a glimpse of the talent recruiting sites gushed over. The 5-wide offensive set that allows him to bounce between wide receiver and running back, without allowing defenses to substitute, could potentially be a big advantage for the Broncos. Stash #2’s name away as a potential star down the line.
Bulldogs trying to move on for a UCLA team lead by Valley stars
It has been a rough week for the Fresno State Bulldogs. The loss to Minnesota was harsh enough. The loss of offensive tackle Netani Muti for the 2018 season was insult to injury. Or, injury to insult. Whatever. It’s not ideal. Despite the setback, Fresno is only a 1-point underdog vs. a sketchy-looking Bruins team. Colorado State netted the conference a big win over the Southeastern Conference Arkansas Razorbacks. Can Fresno put another head on the wall?
