NCAA Football: Boise State at Utah State Chris Nicoll-USA TODAY Sports

Now that it’s officially game week, position battles are being resolved as depth charts are released. Just a few more days of the offseason to get through.

MW Season Predictions

Chris Vannini at the Athletic gives us his prediction for the season in the Mountain West. He has the usual suspects finishing atop each division. He also makes the claim that the Mountain West is the best Group of 5 conference at the top.

NM State names its starting quarterback...

JUCO transfer Matt Romero will start for New Mexico State against Wyoming in their first game of the season. Romero previously played two seasons at Palomar Junior College in San Marcos, California. Coach Doug Martin commented that the quarterback race was tight between Romero and redshirt freshman Nick Jeanty, so they have options if Romero struggles.

...and he will be facing off with another first-time starter in game 1

Tyler Vander Waal will be the opposing quarterback as he replaces first round pick Josh Allen. The redshirt freshman is a former three-star recruit, and he looks to have a bright future. The news of Vander Waal being named the starter was not unexpected, as backup Nick Smith said that he knew all through camp that Vander Waal would be QB1.

CSU starting quarterback ready for action

K.J. Carta-Samuels was named the Rams starting quarterback on Saturday when they released the depth chart for their first game against Hawaii. The grad transfer from Washington will try to do his part to maintain the productive offenses that CSU has had the past few seasons. Carta-Samuels announced he would transfer to CSU after presumed starter Colin Hill went down with an ACL injury during the offseason. Since then, Carta-Samuels has worked tirelessly to prepare for the season.

Anticipation builds for Utah State

Utah State’s final scrimmage of camp provided attendees with a glimpse of the team’s progress on Saturday. Head coach Matt Wells noted that they held some of the veterans out to heal up, giving the younger players a chance to make an impression. The Aggies will begin preparing for their first opponent, Michigan State, this week. Wells also noted that this is the most depth his team has had since he arrived in Logan.
