Welcome to game week ladies and gentlemen! It may be Week 0, but there are 3 MWC teams playing in a few short days. We are kicking off a week that will have actual college football games with another round of links.
Specialists are known to be a bit quirky and sophomore punter Ryan Stonehouse is no exception. But he is also placing big expectations upon himself after a solid first-year campaign and earning a spot on the pre-season all-MWC team. He spent the summer working on his craft and sees improvements this upcoming year.
Head Coach Jeff Tedford, who spent his first two weeks simply studying the program when he started, outlined four big reasons he believes Fresno State was so successful last year. First and foremost was academics, with players going over assignments and due dates with their positions coaches. Also, there was a strong commitment to strength and conditioning, getting a new plan for recruiting (positions were unbalanced and they only had 69 scholarship players). Finally, redesigning their nutrition and making sure players were eating their available options (40% of allotted meals in dining halls were wasted).
Boise State held their second closed scrimmage of fall camp on Friday. Coach Harsin gave a bit more info than the last time. He said they mainly worked situational stuff, two-minute drills, goal lines, and the like. He mentioned QB Rypien threw the ball well, but the defense also had quite a few turnovers. It’s always hard to tell if one side is that good or the other side is really struggling when they keep going against each other.
Head coach Jeff Monken coaches Army. But he is very high on Air Force QB Arion Worthman, despite his junior season struggles. Monken calls him a terrific kid and a good player and has a hard time believing he wont bounce back. His leadership is off the charts. Navy HC Ken Niumatalolo chimed in with some praise as well. If Air Force is to make a run at the conference championship, the play of Worthman is key.
This week in the story that won’t end...
