Recruiting in the Mountain West has been busy for the past month or so and if anything, it only increased this past week. The MWC saw two new commits to Air Force and San Diego State respectively. Last week’s post stated there were 78 known offers handed out by Mountain West schools. This past week more than doubled that, with a whopping 159 known offers in the conference. Air Force had 18 by themselves, while UNLV tallied 15. However, Hawaii put out 20 offers in this cycle and they capture the lead photo for the week.
Commitment Spotlight:
DL Shawn Nielsen (San Diego State)
“I have always been a big fan of SDSU football, the city of San Diego and the university. And I was always hopeful that I would get an opportunity to play and go to school there. In fact, I have been to the football camp there the last couple of years. The recruiting process just made me even more interested. I loved all the coaches I’ve met and the more I learned about the kind of attack style defense Coach Long plays, I thought I could really contribute to the program. And of course, having the opportunity to play Football where my family can see me play is something I always hoped for. I had met Coach McGarry last year at camp and I made sure he got my film after my junior season. He invited me to a spring practice where I met coach Lawson and was able to see how they coach. I have been in touch with the coaches throughout our spring and I was offered a few weeks back. Once I finished our Spring practice, I asked to come down one more time, and I was able to speak to Coach Long and knew now was the time to commit. I was able to commit to Coach Long face to face which was cool. They have me at DL and the way I think I will make an impact is by playing hard, tough, fast and disruptive. I will always work hard and I will do what the coaches need me to do for the team.”
RB JD Kolb (Air Force)
“Their running style with the use of 2 RB’s all the time really sticks out to me as a big factor for going their. I fit their system really well as a runner. Also, going to the Academy will give me a future beyond football that will have me set in life. On my junior day visit, I really liked the coaches, facilities and the tradition that is there is pretty special. RB Coach Miller was really good to talk with and felt comfortable with him. My recruiting coach Means was down to earth and honest. Coach Calhoun was just a good person and the conversations I’ve had with him have been good and easy to do. I’ll be able to come in early and compete for a position!!”
Recruiting Tidbits
There were some trends I noticed when typing the list. For instance, the Rams handed out tons of QB offers, which tells me they missed on their initial tier and now are moving on to the next tier of players on their board. Same with Boise State and their slew of OL offers this week. Hawaii is known for offering a lot of players and they certainly supported that claim this week. Something else that has stuck out to me in the past few weeks is New Mexico seems to be offering less JUCO players than years past. If I really dove into it, there would no doubt be other trends in the offers below.
