Beating on teammates, arrests, Brett Rypien, and more

NCAA Football: Boise State at Air Force Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

UNM linebacker suspended for beating up a teammate

New Mexico senior linebacker Evahelotu Tohi, the Lobos’ leading tackler, was suspended from all team activities because he was involved in an fight that left a teammate needing to be sent to the hospital. This is just the latest bad headline for a program that’s had some controversy during this latest athletic cycle. It’s not unfair to wonder how much longer the Davie era will last.

In most pressing situations, Boise State offense and Rypien have been at their best

It’s been the story of Brett Rypien’s career that he’s often judged by his infrequent failures. His performance vs. San Diego State was abysmal, but he’s otherwise been tremendous, especially in 3rd-and-long situations that look destined for the punting unit to make an appearance. It’s not exactly expert analysis, but it’s true: Rypien will need to be stellar this month if Boise State is to play spoiler for dreaming-big Fresno State and Utah State.

Court date set in Ghaifan’s misdemeanor case

It’s been a rough season at times for a Wyoming defensive unit that had high hopes for this season. The Pokes turned things around this past weekend by whipping Colorado State and retaining the Bronze Boot, but junior defensive tackle Youhanna Ghainfan’s suspension was a damper on an otherwise solid bounce-back weekend for the Cowboys. There was talk of Ghaifan maybe having a banner season and leaving early for the NFL. Not so sure about that now.

Warriors once again don’t expect to have Tavai against 18th-ranked Utah State

This has been a polarizing season for Hawaii football. Fans are mad. Should they be? The team is one win away from bowl eligibility with three games to go, something even reasonably optimistic fans didn’t expect in the preseason. That said, this currently three-game losing skid had been brutal. It might not get much better with 18th-ranked Utah State coming to town. Star linebacker Jahlani Tavai will be out once again. This one could get guy, and Hawaii desperately needs the upcoming bye week.
