Hawaii Wide Receiver John Ursua Added to Biletnikoff Award Watch List

Rainbow Warrior pass catcher already has 453 receiving yards on the season

NCAA Football: Hawaii at Wyoming Troy Babbitt-USA TODAY Sports

Earlier today, the Tallahassee Quarterback Club (TQC) Foundation announced that Sophomore wide receiver John Ursua was one of the 10 wide receivers added to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List. The Biletnikoff Award annually recognizes the top wide receiver in college football.

It should come as no surprise that Ursua was added to the list. Through the first three games of the season, Ursua is currently ranked 1st nationally in receiving yards per game at 151 YPG, and 2nd in receptions per game at 10 RPG. Ursua has 453 receiving yards on the season, and at this pace is not only racing toward conference honors, but also on pace for one of the best seasons ever from a Rainbow Warrior receiver.

Ursua started the season off in fine fashion, registering 272 receiving yards against UMass. It was the most dominant performance from a Hawaii receiver since Jason Rivers broke the school record by posting 308 receiving yards vs. Arizona State in the 2006 Hawaii Bowl. Ursua sat out the Western Carolina game in an effort to heal up, yet still lands at second in receiving yards in the Mountain West despite the missed game.

The 2017 Biletnikoff Award winner will be presented live on December 7, 2017, on The Home Depot College Football Awards Show. The show will be broadcast from 7:00-9:00 p.m. EST on ESPN. Biletnikoff Award voter Desmond Howard will present the 2017 Biletnikoff Award winner on the show. It’s been nearly 20 years since a player from the now known “Group of 5” has won the award (Louisiana Tech’s Troy Edwards in 1998), but that won’t stop Ursua from being a menace in Mountain West play.

Ursua and the Warriors will take the field again this Saturday at Aloha Stadium vs. Colorado State at 6 PM HT.
