After slow recruiting news for much of August, things picked up this past week. Mountain West Connection was able to get in touch with the newest commits from Nevada (WR Charles Ross) and Hawaii (WR Eric Rooks). Also, now that games have been played (including 3 MWC teams) and the rest of college football starting next weekend, players will be taking official visits. Expect much more movement and news updates as recruits take visits and commit in the coming weeks and months. Until then, enjoy.
Commit Interview: Charles Ross
MWConnection: What were some of the factors that led to your decision to commit to Nevada?
Ross: I love the coaching staff. They made me feel like a priority. On my visit, everyone was showing me love, staff, players. Also, I liked that Kap (Collin Kaepernick) played here and led some great teams. I want to be part of teams that get the program back to that.
MWConnection: Which coaches played a part in your recruitment?
Ross: Coach Norvell talked to me for an hour and a half on my visit. That left an impression on me. Also, the WR coach. We talked about how they needed me and they are looking for a true freshman to come in and play right away so I’ll have that opportunity.
MWConnection: What kind of player are you and how are they looking to use you at Nevada?
Ross: I would consider myself kind of a do-it-all receiver. I can go get the deep ball and run over the middle. I go up there and make the catch and I don’t care who is guarding me. The coaches also said they may have me return punts and one of the defensive coaches said they may try me out on the defensive side of the ball.
MWConnection: What are your plans going forward?
Ross: Right now I plan to play my senior season and I’ll sign in February. I need to take care of my academics to make sure everything is in order before I go to Nevada.
Commit Interview: Eric Rooks
MWConnection: What made you decide to commit to Hawaii? What do you like about it?
Rooks: The family environment is second to none and thats what I was looking for in a school a close knit team.
MWConnection: How would you describe your relationship with the coaching staff and which ones played a role in your recruitment?
Rooks: I've known coach Henson for a while he recruited me while I was in Chicago he is crazy honest and that's what I need in a coach some who really is going to let me know what's up.
MWConnection: Did the coaches say how they envision using you once you're on campus?
Rooks: They told me they're losing 3 WR's this year so they want me to try and come work for a spot asap.
MWConnection: How do you feel about what Coach Rolo is doing in Hawaii, trying to rebuild the program?
Rooks: He is doing a good job making changes to the program but at the same time keeping tradition so that is why the people in Hawaii love him so much.
