McCoy, a San Diego native, is a consensus five-star from the class of 2017. He was born in Chicago and attended Morse High School. ESPN ranked McCoy 15th in its top 100 rankings this spring, citing his physical stature, basketball savvy and finishing ability around the rim in his scouting report.
McCoy adds a much-needed go-to post player for the Runnin’ Rebs. He will be an immediate starter for a UNLV team that is currently rebuilding but will look to turn the page under second-year head coach Marvin Menzies.
Personal ties to UNLV played a focal part in McCoy’s decision to pursue UNLV. McCoy has expressed his close friendship with Anthony Smith, a JUCO transfer who recently committed to UNLV this spring.
McCoy (6-11, 240) will be the first five-star recruit at UNLV since Stephen Zimmerman, who was the 10th overall recruit from the class of 2015. The Rebs finished last season with a 11-21 record.
