Mountain West Madness has begun for the San Jose State Spartans, who faced the Utah State Aggies at Thomas & Mack Center on Wednesday morning.

Ryan Welage scored the first five points for the Spartans, who held a 5-4 lead over the Aggies at 15:59 of the first half.

SJSU continued to apply pressure on Utah State as Jaycee Hillsman dominated on both ends of the court. The Spartans pulled within one when Brandon Mitchell rose for a dunk and swished for a three less than four minutes later.

The Aggies went on a 11-0 run, but the Spartans ended Utah State’s dominance as Brandon Clarke scored four consecutive points with 3:51 left in the half. Jalen James scored the final five points for the Spartans, tying the score 31-31 at the half.

The game wasn’t in favor of the Spartans. The Aggies bounced back to dominate the court in the second half. Jalen Moore demonstrated authority as his poster dunked over a Spartan defender at 13:21 of the half.

The Spartans took the first lead of the game, but trailed behind and were unable to mount a comeback. They got blown out by the Aggies, 90-64.

The Spartans’ offense committed 14 turnovers and 11 assists as opposed to the Aggies’ 10 turnovers and 22 assists.
