UNLV head coach Tony Sanchez announces quarterback change

Johnny Stanton expected to be out 3-4 weeks.

Three days removed from an embarrassing 33-30 home loss to the Idaho Vandals after which UNLV Rebels (1-3) head coach Tony Sanchez stated he “very, very, very briefly” considered a mid-game change at quarterback, the decision is being made for him.

After starting quarterback Johnny Stanton missed Tuesday’s practice, Sanchez announced that redshirt freshman Dalton Sneed will be under center for the Rebels Saturday versus Fresno State.

The 6-foot, 195 pound signal caller from Scottsdale, Arizona has thrown all of one pass this season. Sanchez was quick to point out that junior Kurt Palandech will also see action at quarterback against the Bulldogs. Palandech appeared in 11 games last season, completed 49% of his passes and threw 9 touchdowns against 5 interceptions.

The small tear in Stanton’s lateral collateral ligament in his right knee and hamstring is expected to keep the junior out 3 to 4 weeks. Through 4 games he’s thrown for 676 yards, 6 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions.

Saturday’s game is Homecoming for the Rebels. UNLV hosts Fresno State at Sam Boyd Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30pm PT.
