Week 2 Mountain West football power rankings: Let the two team race begin

Boise State and San Diego State claim the top two spots.

Now that Utah State has lost, the only teams to receive first place votes are Boise State and San Diego State. So, it begins the battle for Mountain West supremacy until one of these two teams loses, and if they even lose.

There is a new number one team with San Diego State getting the win over Cal and more than doubling their first-place votes from last week. Boise State lost 10 first-place votes but they are comfortably in second. Air Force is third but after the league is basically a toss up and the separation from fourth to 10th was extremely close.

Somehow, Utah State remains at No. 4 despite getting boar-raced by USC and then UNLV moves up three spots despite also losing this week to the other SoCal school in UCLA.

Perhaps another week of games will create some clarity with something more solid than the top three, and the bottom, sorry Hawaii.

What will help is having fewer FCS games this week as there are only two on the schedule for Week 3. There are plenty of road games that could swing the vote with Fresno State at Toledo, UNLV at Central Michigan and San Diego State at Northern Illinois.

Parity is a good thing but lets hope it is the good kind for the Mountain West where teams are getting wins against the top and bottom of these league, well maybe not the very top as getting a team to a New Year's Six Bowl game will help this league a lot.
