Week 2 college football rankings: San Diego State, Boise State knocking on the door

Watch out, college football universe. The San Diego State Aztecs and the Boise State Broncos are part of the national conversation.

A week after a season opening 31-0 drubbing of New Hampshire, the Aztecs felled a Pac-12 foe, knocking off the California Golden Bears, 45-40 on Saturday night. Sunday, SDSU received 51 votes in the AP poll, good for 28th, and 27 votes in the USA Today coaches’ poll, 33rd most.

Similary, Boise State toppled the Pac-12 on Saturday, escaping the Washington State Cougars, 31-28 on the blue turf. That, with last week’s 45-10 win over the Louisiana-Lafayette Rajun’ Cajuns, puts the Broncos at 2-0 heading into a week four matchup with Oregon State. This week BSU received 42 votes in the AP poll, 30th most, and 37 votes in the coaches’ poll, good for 31st.

No other Mountain West Conference teams received a vote in either poll.
