On Saturday Utah State finished up their last scrimmage before their game against Weber State, which is coming up on September 1st. Overall, Coach Wells was very pleased with the play on both sides of the ball. However, Wells was especially pleased with the Offense.
Award hopefuls Kent Myers and Devante Mays both shined, as Myers went 11-for-14 with 142 passing yards and Mays rushed for 43 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Rayshad Lewis, son of Ray Lewis and freshman wide receiver, also had an impressive day catching 4 passes for 64 yards. Other than emphasizing red zone efficiency Coach Wells had no complaints.
While the day was largely successful it ended on a sour note, afterward, Coach Wells announced that Junior lineman Jarom Ioane would be out for the rest of the season with a “lower leg” injury. Ioane was in contention for a starting job on the offensive line, and he played in 13 games last year for the Aggies.
Coach Wells did say that he felt bad for Ioane but admits that the team has to keep pushing forward. Either Austin Albrecht or Jake Simonich will take Ioane’s place on the offensive line, as Wells is looking to provide the line with more flexibility.
Until September 1st, Utah State practices will be closed as they prepare for their season opener against Weber State.
