The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels will leave the Bahamas with a 2-1 record after defeating the Providence Storm 102-87 on Thursday. Jalen Poyser led the way for the Rebels with 28 points, five assists, and three rebounds.
Jovan Mooring, Djordjije Slijivancanin, Uche Ofoegbu, Kris Clyburn, and Christian Jones started for UNLV. Despite this lineup not playing much time together, it seemed Marvin Menzies was trying to experiment by starting a true big man in Slijivancanin. Jalen Poyser and Tyrell Green came off the bench despite starting in the first game of this exhibition tournament.
If this lineup is used during the regular season then I predict that Cheikna Dembele will replace Slijivancanin in the starting rotation.
Jovan Mooring, a NJCCA transfer from South Suburban College, was supposed to bring in some much need offense for UNLV but only scored six points in about 40 minutes of playing time over the entire tournament. This could have been a bad stretch, but this is something to keep an eye on when the regular season starts.
Two Rebels had double-doubles. Christian Jones had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Kris Clyburn had 19 points and 12 boards.
Christian Jones’ double-double was his thrid of the tournament. Uche Ofoegbu had 15 points and seven rebounds. Tyrell Green had another great game off the bench with 14 points and 5 boards.
The Rebels will return to Las Vegas on Saturday.
