This matchup was able to happen as the series between Gonzaga and Cal fell through, according to Jon Rothstein. This is a big time game for both teams and a game that San Diego State needs to boost their RPI for next year.
The Mountain West was down last year and the 16-2 conference record did not matter as the Aztecs were not given at-large consideration after losing to Fresno State in the conference title game.
The Mountain West may not be that much better this upcoming year so teams in the league need to make their own path by scheduling up in the non-conference season to boost their schedule strength.
The Aztecs already are scheduled to play in the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu and that event features four NCAA Tournament teams from this past year: Utah, Tulsa, Stephen F. Austin and Hawaii.
Gonzaga and San Diego State have met two times previously with the most recent game being in 2010 where the Aztecs upset then-No. 11 Bulldogs, and the other game was all the way back in 1959 where Gonzaga was the victors.
