With the departure of Cullen Neal, who will be transferring, the University of New Mexico's basketball program is in need of a point guard. They hope to fill that void with Jalen Harris, who committed to UNM on Sunday via twitter. Harris is a 6'2'', 160 pounds high school star from Raleigh, North Carolina.
He currently attends Word of God Christian Academy, renowned for producing former UK standout and NBA star John Wall. In fact, Harris also plays on Wall's AAU team. I'm sure that Lobo fans are hoping that Harris follows in his predecessors footsteps.
Harris describes himself as an athletic guard with long-range capabilities. The 247 Sports Composite ranks him as a top 15 player in his state and a top 60 player for his position in the nation. He has shown nice hops and good vision. Check out some of his AAU highlights below.
He turned down offers from Vanderbilt and Buffalo to come to Albuquerque. At New Mexico he will find some competition at his position: Jordan Hunter seems poised for the starting role while red-shirt Adam Cumber will expect playing time as well. I hope to see Harris in his first year, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is relegated to the gym to bulk up his frame.
