Rawle Alkins, the 5-star class of 2016 shooting guard out of Word of God Christian Academy in North Carolina, announced that he will be attending the University of Arizona this fall.
The 6'-5", number 17 overall player in the class of 2016 (according to 247sports.com), had narrowed his choices to five schools: University of Arizona, UNLV, St. Johns, NC State and North Carolina.
This is a huge get for Sean Miller, as Alkins will be joining fellow five star recruit Kobi Simmons in the Wildcats back court.
Even though Alkins had a good visit to UNLV (per the Review Journal), and still had UNLV in his final five (likely his top three), it was unlikely that he was still giving them serious consideration given all the uncertainties surrounding the program. It would have been pretty shocking for a player of Alkins' caliber to commit to a school that is about to begin a large scale head coaching search.
While Alkins would have been a huge grab for UNLV, all is not lost. The Runnin' Rebels still have a strong recruiting class coming in for 2016, with Justin Jackson, Jaylen Fisher, Christian Vital, and Carlos Johnson. Both Jackson and Fisher are rated in the top 100 for 2016 with Fisher at #80 and Jackson at #32.
Here's the mixtape of Alkins so Rebel fans can see what they are missing out on next year.
