UNLV interviewing New Mexico State's Marvin Menzies

Now that Mick Cronin to UNLV is dead, the Rebels are moving on to the next name on their coaching search list. New Mexico State head coach Marvin Menzies is flying into Las Vegas on Saturday to interview for the job, according to Mark Anderson of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Menzies has coached the Aggies for nine seasons with good results as he has a 198-111 overall record, four straight WAC tournament titles and they made a fifth championship game this year but fell to Cal State Bakersfield. He has never finished lower than third in the WAC regular season and either won or shared the conference regular season title three times. He also guided New Mexico State to five NCAA tournament appearances.

He does have ties to UNLV as he coached under former head coach Lon Kruger in the 2004-05 season, and he has familiarity with the Mountain West having coached under Steve Fisher at San Diego State between 1999-2003.

Pulling a coach from the current version of the WAC seems like poor choice to interview from for the Rebels as they have been in the top-20 nationally in their recruiting classes over the past few years.

However, an argument can be made that Menzies has done a lot with very little at New Mexico State and the move up to better facilities, recruiting and league will help him thrive even more because one of the issues with Dave Rice was getting the most out of the talent from those highly rated recruits.

Other candidates that are in the mix are Stave Lavin whose recent jobs were at St. John's and UCLA, and a new name is in the mix which is St. Mary's Randy Bennett.
