San Diego State managed to prolong their season at home in a quarterfinal matchup against Georgia Tech. The Aztecs once again received tremendous hometown support, and they won, 72-56.
San Diego State came off an exceptional performance against Washington, and they expected similar results against Georgia Tech.The defense had its traditional great showing by holding the Yellow Jackets well below their season average of 74 points per game.
While senior Winston Shepard led the way against Washington, the Aztecs found their hero in sophomore guard Trey Kell against Georgia Tech. Kell notched 18 points and converted 4 of 5 from three-point range. More than anything, the Aztecs found relief in Georgia Tech's dismal second half offense.
Georgia Tech didn't seem ready for San Diego State's electrifying Viejas Arena. Perhaps this is because the Yellow Jackets had previously steamrolled a gritty South Carolina team in the second round. Regardless, Marcus Georges-Hunt led the Georgia Tech attack, with 18 points, six boards, and three assists.
San Diego State's semifinal opponent is the George Washington Colonials. George Washington is coming off a hard-earned victory over the Florida Gators on Wednesday.
San Diego State and George Washington will square off in Madison Square Garden on Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.
