2016 San Jose State football recruiting: DE Dante Abono commits to the Spartans

Unheralded DE chooses Spartans over UC-Davis and Hawaii.

Dante Abono is an under-the-radar type of recruit. He is listed as a defensive end, but he originally started out in high school as an offensive tackle. However, after growing to a tall 6'6" frame, he recently made the move over to defensive end.

He isn't ranked by any services, but he hadn't really gotten in to the recruiting process until the summer before his senior year. He attended some camps, where his name was soon picked up by Spartans defensive line coach James Jones.

Abono had this to say about his transition from the offensive line to the other side of the line of scrimmage:

"When I was younger, offensive line was my thing," Abono said. "But when I got into high school, I started getting taller. I'm now 6-foot-6, pushing 6-foot-7. I haven't really filled out much and now I'm long-limbed and really athletic. So that's how I'm making my mark. I finished with 13 sacks on the season and I had a heck of a time on defense."
