2016 SJSU football recruiting: TE Cameron Woodard commits to San Jose State

Spartans snag a hometown TE from Valley Christian Schools.

Student Sports

Cameron Woodard is a big tight end and a hometown kid for the Spartans. He holds offers from not only San Jose State, but also from New Mexico and San Diego State.  While he did not get any offers, he did garner interest from some more notable programs such as Cal, Texas, and Nevada. While the Spartans were one of the first schools to offer Woodard, he did take his time on giving any commitment, waiting until almost the last minute before making a decision.

He had this to say about the Spartans and why I chose to stay home (Per Scout.com):

"I liked their offense," Woodard said. "It's kind of close to my school's offense in certain ways. I think the way they used Billy Freeman this year was great. I know he was nominated for the best tight end in the nation. That goes to show a lot in the way coach Ferrigno was able to get his skills better and how the offense was able to use him. I think that will help show my skills when it's my turn to contribute to the program."

Woodard was first offered by San Jose State, as well as San Diego State, in April of 2015. From there, his relationship with special teams coach Dan Ferrigno became one of the top reasons he began to favor SJSU. He has more recently added an offer from New Mexico, but the relationship with the Spartans led to his commitment.

"San Jose State has always been there since the beginning," Woodard said. "I've got a really good relationship with the coaching staff. I felt comfortable with them. Me and my family talked about it and I chose San Jose State.Spartans snag a hometown TE from Valley Christian Schools.

"Coach Ferrigno for sure, I have had a really good relationship with him," Woodard said. "He's always been in contact with me, and coach Carragher too. After I visited the school, I know they have the major that I want to do, business management. It's a famous business school so that also attracted me a lot. Going through their building process, I think I could help speed up that process. They are on their way up and I want to be a part of that process."
