2016 Wyoming football recruiting: Cowboys land verbal commit from John Okwoli

Did Wyoming get a play maker in its latest verbal commit in WR John Okwoli?

Troy Babbitt-USA TODAY Sports

Wyoming received a huge boost to their 2016 recruiting class with the verbal commitment of 3-star Wide Receiver John Okwoli. Wyoming brought the receiver in over the weekend for a last minute official visit and received the good news Sunday night.

Okwoli visited Utah State on January 15th and Boise State on January 22nd. Expectations were was that Okwoli was going to decide between the Aggies and Broncos earlier in the process but the prized receiver waited and spurned for Wyoming just two days before Signing Day.

Okwoli grabbed the attention of many programs through the Rocky Mountain area with Nevada, UNLV, Colorado, Washington State and New Mexico State all having offers on the table as well.

The 6'2" 190 pound receiver was a three sport athlete (Football, Basketball, Track & Field) at North Canyon High School in the Phoenix area.

On the football field, Okwoli ran slot receiver routs and in other situations he served as the main deep threat. During his junior year, Okwoli caught 86 balls for 1,408 and 10 touchdowns.

His production dipped mildly during his senior year, hauling in 51 receptions for 747 yards and 6 touchdowns. Some of the dip in production can be accredited to Okwoli playing on both sides of the ball during his senior year. His 6'2" frame was used as a cornerback where the versatile Okwoli blossomed. On film Okwoli's ball skills and tackling ability show a player that looks just as good on defense as offense.

Time will tell to where Okwoli will fit in with offensive coordinator Brent Vigen's offense but production may not be immediately required. He joins a Wyoming receiving unit that took major strides in 2015. Juniors Jake Maulhardt and Tanner Gentry combined for over 1,300 yards receiving and twelve touchdowns.Okwoli is the third 3 star recruit to commit to Wyoming. He joins Kicker Copper Roth and Offensive Tackle Dustin Weeks.
