ESPN Releases BPI Rankings, San Diego State Leads Mountain West

ESPN’s ranking system has SDSU in the top 50.

ESPN released its preseason BPI rankings Tuesday morning, with the new college basketball season tipping off later this week.

Preseason BPI is based upon four main factors: the percentage of returning players, past performance, recruiting rankings and coaches’ performance. The BPI has become an increasingly important metric for the NCAA Tournament selection committee creating its field of 68 teams every March. Not to be confused with RPI, the BPI is a far more respected ranking system than the heavily flawed RPI.

Here is a glance at the Mountain West team rankings:

National Rank Team BPI Offense Rank BPI Defense Rank
46 San Diego State 99 12
75 Nevada 87 72
78 New Mexico 67 109
85 Fresno State 102 87
86 Boise State 84 112
144 Air Force 103 203
162 UNLV 215 113
191 Utah State 106 289
209 Wyoming 160 251
214 Colorado State 179 252
294 San Jose State 331 206

San Diego State is the clear frontrunner, but it should be worth noting that five of the 11 Mountain West teams are ranked in the top 100. Ken Pomeroy's ranking system on, however, has only two teams (San Diego State and New Mexico) ranked in the top 100.

New Mexico, Utah State, Fresno State, UNLV, Wyoming, Nevada, San Diego State and Air Force all play their first regular season game Friday night.
