For the second straight year San Diego State (8-1, 5-0 MW) has clinched the West Division crown of the Mountain West Conference, and earned a spot in the 2016 Mountain West Football Championship game, the league announced Sunday. The game is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 3 and kicks off at either 7:30 or 7:45 p.m. ET and be televised on either ESPN or ESPN2.
The Aztecs wrapped up the West Division title after a 55-0 rout against Hawai’i on Saturday. One could say the Rainbow Warriors brought the Aztecs macadamia nuts, and in return the Aztecs gave the ‘Bow’s goose eggs.
Meanwhile, Nevada lost at New Mexico and that gives SDSU a three-game advantage in the West Division over second-place teams Hawai’i (3-3) and UNLV (2-3), and wins the tiebreaker advantage in the event that the teams were to finish with identical 5-3 records.
The Aztecs have been dominant in Mountain West conference play, with 16 straight wins against conference opponents, and winning 18 of its last 19 contests. The only loss this season has been to South Alabama.
The 2016 Mountain West Football Championship will be played at the site of the divisional champion with the best College Football Playoff (CFP) Selection Committee ranking. The site determination will be made by Sunday following the final week of regular-season games, utilizing the latest available CFP poll.
If one divisional champion was ranked ahead of the other divisional champion in the committees poll and wins in the final weekend of the regular season, they will be declared the host.
If, in that same scenario, the divisional champion that was the highest-ranked in the CFP poll loses in the final weekend of the regular season, a composite of selected computer rankings following the final week of regular-season games will be used to determine the host, but only if neither team is ranked the final top 25 ranking.
