Hawaii has a return to trip to play UMass in 2017 and there is a possibility that the game to face the Minuteman might not be played in at either Amherhest or even in Foxboro, Massachusetts, which is the home of the New England Patriots, but at at Fenway Park which for those non-baseball fans hosts the Boston Red Sox.
UMass head coach Mark Whipple was giving an interview prior to this weekends game against BYU and said the team and the park are looking to find a game to be played in the famed Boston ballpark.
That would certainly be an interesting move for UMass. Fenway Sports Group will put anything in Fenway Park, literally anything, as a snowboard big air competition has shown us, so it is not a stretch to see a UMass game there. Boston College was technically the road team to Notre Dame in a Shamrock Series game at Fenway in 2015.
The one problem is that the 2017 home schedule for UMass is not great. Had they played Mississippi State next year that would have been an attractive, but the ‘17 slate includes Hawaii plus Old Dominion, Georgia Southern, Appalachian State, Ohio University and Maine.
None of those games are all that attractive for a game in November to bring in a good crowd, and there is no guarantee that UMass or any of these teams will be a huge draw even if both teams happen to be good next year.
Hawaii might actually be the best team on this list and especially if they keep on the uptick that likely could be a bowl team next season.
