Larry Eustacy and crew open the 2016-17 regular season against the New Mexico State Aggies Sunday at Moby Arena. The Rams look to prove the doubters wrong and get back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since the 2012-13 season. The Rams will lean heavily on redshirt senior guard Gian Clavell and senior forward Emmanuel Omogbo. Both played will in the Rams one and only preseason game with Clavell dropping in 13 points and Omogbo with 16.
These two will need to be leaders all season long but their leadership on the floor on Sunday is particularly important as the Rams have a slew of new faces. Returning guards J.D. Paige and Prentiss Nixon will also need to contribute heavily if the Rams are to defeat an Aggies team that has been to the postseason the last five seasons.Paige and Nixon were solid contributors a year ago but need to be more consistent on the scoring front to relieve the expected defensive pressure on Clavell and Omogbo. The Aggies have a new head coach in Paul Weir.
Weir took over for Marvin Menzies who moved onto UNLV during the spring but spent the last five years as an assistant coach in Las Cruces.. Weir will rely heavily on senior guard Ian Baker who is one of the all time great 3-point shooters at New Mexico State. Tip is scheduled for 2pm MST and can be seen on ROOT Sports.
