College football playoff rankings: Boise State comes in at 24th

Where did the Mountain West land in the initial playoff rankings?

NCAA Football: Big 12 Media Day Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

The College Football Playoff committee released the only poll that actually matters in their first top 25 poll. The top of the poll had no surprises since there are four undefeated major college football teams in Alabama, Michigan, Clemson and Washington; however, that is not the order as Texas A&M gets the fourth spot over Washington.

For our purposes, we want to know where the other undefeated team lands in this poll in Western Michigan who is 8-0 and is actually in action tonight in #MACtion against Ball State and could make the poll irrelevant after a few hours if the Broncos are upset. Western Michigan is 23rd and much lower than some may have thought as they are undefeated and have a pair of wins over Big Ten teams in Northwestern and Illinois.

/bangs head.

In the Mountain West, Boise State is ranked in both the AP and Coaches poll at the 24th spot and are currently 7-1 on year and are coming off of their loss to Wyoming. The Broncos are ranked at 24th but they need a lot of help to move up in the poll and also to even have a chance to win the Mountain West.

San Diego State also has one loss on the year and are in the running for the New Year Six bowl game if Western Michigan Stumbles but they are not ranked in this initial poll and it may not matter.

The Aztecs are in the mix as one of the handful of teams in the mix, and in the interim San Diego State just needs to keep winning and make the committee have a tough choice at 12-1. The one piece of help they need is to have Western Michigan stumble down the stretch.

Here is the complete first poll:

1. Alabama

2. Clemson

3. Michigan

4. Texas A&M

5. Washington

6. Ohio State

7. Louisville

8. Wisconsin

9. Auburn

10. Nebraska

11. Florida

12. Penn State

13. LSU

14. Oklahoma

15. Colorado

18. Oklahoma State

19. Virginia Tech

20. West Virginia

21. North Carolina

22. Florida State

23. Western Michigan

25. Washington State

No need to overreact to this poll as it is the first of more to come and there is still five more weeks of college football left and things can change very quickly.
