Week 6 Mountain West football rankings: There is a new number one

Boise State takes over as the number one team with San Diego State’s loss.

Brian Losness-USA TODAY Sports

There is finally some shakeup in our latest Mountain West power rankings due to conference play starting, but the biggest change came from an out of league game with San Diego State stumbling against South Alabama to suffer their first loss of the year.

That loss knocks San Diego State from a near unanimous spot to the third place in this poll, but at least one voter feels strongly enough to keep at least one first-place vote.

Boise State takes over that top spot and but in addition to San Diego State taking a first-place vote the Air Force Falcons also take a first place vote.

After the third spot the votes were all over the board from Wyoming, Utah State and New Mexico all earn some fourth place votes but it ultimately went to Utah State by a close margin over Wyoming and New Mexico.

The other end of the poll saw some shifting with Hawaii getting another win this year and their first conference game of the year and moved from their residency at the basement to the ninth spot. The new bottom team is Fresno State who dropped after their loss to UNLV.

One quirk in this poll saw only Utah State remain in the same position as last week by holding down the fourth spot.

There are plenty of chances for another shape up as this is the first week that all six games are conference matchups.

Here is last week’s poll.
