UNLV Athletics Director Tina Kunzer-Murphy’s $240,000 contract with the university expires on December 31st, 2016. What will happen beyond that date is yet to be decided, Kunzer-Murphy said Monday evening.
“Nothing has been finalized,” Kunzer-Murphy said. “We’re talking about it but haven’t come to any resolution.”
There’s a possibility that Kunzer-Murphy could remain at UNLV and accept another position with the university. The Las Vegas native was named interim Athletics Director July 1st, 2013, and was appointed to the position on a permanent basis six months later.
Under Kunzer-Murphy’s leadership UNLV athletics has seen mixed results. While many non-revenue sports have flourished, and the hiring of head football coach Tony Sanchez was well received, his program has yet to establish itself as a significant threat in the Mountain West Conference.
Following the dismissal of men’s head basketball coach Dave Rice in January, the university fumbled the hiring of his replacement. Chris Beard accepted the job as coach of the Runnin’ Rebels on March 27th, only to leave UNLV for the same job at Texas Tech on April 15th. Two days later Marvin Menzies was named as the successor to Beard.
A decision regarding Kunzer-Murphy’s future with UNLV is expected to be made within the next couple of weeks.
