Mountain West football Week 3 odds: Who covers this week

How does the Mountain West stand up from Las Vegas' stand point after a tough Week 2?

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

The Mountain West is looking to rebound from a rough Week 2 and this third week is almost as tough as last week but not quite. With it being mid-week lets take a look at the odds, and at this moment some games do not have odds as of this posting.

Teams Win-Loss Streak Open Current Spread Money O/U
New Mexico (1-1) (0-0 A) L-1 n/a n/a n/a
Arizona State (1-1) (1-0 H) W-1 -24 -28 n/a n/a n/a

Arizona State has not looked all that great and neither has New Mexico. The Lobos will be able to move the ball as Cal Poly did with a similar run-based attack. Twenty-eight points is a lot and earlier my prediction was a dumb one by saying New Mexico would upset Arizona State. That probably won't happen since their defense is not that good, but they should be able to keep pace and cover the massive 28-point line.

Teams Win-Loss Streak Open Current Spread Money O/U
Idaho State (1-1) (0-0 A) L-1
Boise State (1-1) (1-0 H) L-1

The other Friday night game is Boise State hosting Idaho State and there is no line on this game, as expected. Look for Boise State to win by three touchdowns, minimum.

Wyoming (0-2) (0-0 A) L-2 n/a n/a n/a
Washington State (1-1) (0-1 H) W-1 n/a n/a n/a

This is another game that for some reason does not have a line. Maybe because no one has a read on either team, Wyoming got blown out by Eastern Michigan and South Dakota. Washington State also lost to an FCS team in Portland State. So, if we treat this a pick'em lets go with Washington State since they are at home.

Utah (2-0) (0-0 A) W-2 PK n/a n/a n/a
Fresno State (1-1) (1-0 H) L-1 PK n/a n/a n/a

Something must be wonky since Utah is ranked and facing Fresno State at Bulldog Stadium, but this game is listed as a pick'em. Utah is most likely going to be without starting quarterback Travis Wilson but backup Kendall Thompson is not far behind as the Utes had a battle for the position through fall camp. Take the Utes and if a line comes out take those points with it.

12:00 AM Game Time Record Line Betting Trend
Teams Win-Loss Streak Open Current Spread Money O/U
UC Davis (0-2) (0-1 A) L-2
Hawaii (1-1) (1-0 H) L-1

Again, no line but I am taking Hawaii to get things together offensively and get a much needed second win.

12:00 PM Game Time Record Line Betting Trend
Teams Win-Loss Streak Open Current Spread Money O/U
UNLV (0-2) (0-1 A) L-2 n/a n/a n/a
Michigan (1-1) (1-0 H) W-1 -34 -34 n/a n/a n/a

Michigan is no UNLV so it is odd that this game has a 34-point line favoring the Wolverines. The Rebels still have a long way to go to be able to beat a team like Michigan. The Rebels need to find a way to get the ball to Devonte Boyd more often and a running game will help. UNLV is slowly improving so take them to cover this line.

12:00 PM Game Time Record Line Betting Trend
Teams Win-Loss Streak Open Current Spread Money O/U
Air Force (2-0) (0-0 A) W-2 n/a n/a n/a
Michigan State (2-0) (1-0 H) W-2 -27.5 -26.5 n/a n/a n/a

Air Force has a chance to pull off a big upset but if they do it will be without starting quarterback Nate Romine, who tore his ACL and MCL, and go with backup Karson Roberts. An upset is likely not to happen but the Falcons run-option attack causes even the best defenses in the nation a struggle. Air Force probably won't win but they will cover this game.

12:00 PM Game Time Record Line Betting Trend
Teams Win-Loss Streak Open Current Spread Money O/U
Nevada (1-1) (0-0 A) L-1 64.5 67 73% n/a n/a
Texas A&M (2-0) (2-0 H) W-2 -25 -34 27% n/a n/a

This is a lot of points and increased nine points in favor of Texas A&M to 34 points. The Nevada offense is not what was thought after the first game, but the Aggies of Texas A&M already took it to a good Arizona State. Nevada likely doesn't have the offense, nor defense, to keep up in this projected shootout -- take the Aggies to cover.

8:00 PM Game Time Record Line Betting Trend
Teams Win-Loss Streak Open Current Spread Money O/U
San Jose State (1-1) (0-1 A) L-1 53.0 51 78% n/a n/a
Oregon State (1-1) (1-0 H) L-1 -8 -7.5 22% n/a n/a

This seems very low but then again maybe San Jose State is getting some credit for being a budding football team this year. They do have Tyler Ervin and Tyler Winston as a great combo so maybe that is why? This is a tough one to call but the Spartans are not sure who their quarterback is so take Oregon State to win and cover.

7:00 PM Game Time Record Line Betting Trend
Teams Win-Loss Streak Open Current Spread Money O/U
Colorado (1-1) (0-1 A) W-1 60.0 -4 10% n/a n/a
Colorado State (1-1) (1-1 H) L-1 -1 59.5 90% n/a n/a

The Rocky Mountain Showdown is an interesting rivalry game. Colorado State has the better talent yet they are a four-point underdog. It all depends on Rashard Higgins who is listed as day-to-day with his ankle injury, and that could be why the line moved so much.

8:00 PM Game Time Record Line Betting Trend
Teams Win-Loss Streak Open Current Spread Money O/U
South Alabama (1-1) (0-1 A) L-1 51.5 48 75% n/a n/a
San Diego State (1-1) (1-0 H) L-1 -15.5 -17.5 25% n/a n/a

With the Aztecs having quarterback issues taking them to win and cover by over 17 points is a lot. However, South Alabama is a new FBS school and the Aztecs should win easily. Go ahead and take San Diego State.

5:00 PM Game Time Record Line Betting Trend
Teams Win-Loss Streak Open Current Spread Money O/U
Utah State (1-1) (0-1 A) L-1 47.0 44 33% n/a n/a
Washington (1-1) (1-0 H) W-1 -3.5 -5.5 67% n/a n/a

While the Aggies offense is struggling a bit, but their defense is still very good. Take Utah State to cover the increased line of 5.5 points and maybe even to win.
