San Diego State drops a close contest against Virginia in NCAA Regional

Virginia edges San Diego State on Saturday in a pitchers duel and now the Aztecs face elimination.

SDSU Athletics

The Aztecs and the Cavaliers, who were the national runners-up in 2014, were tied up at 1-1 through seven and a half innings when Virginia scored two runs on three hits in the bottom of the eight inning to take a 3-1 lead that Virginia would not give up. With the win, Virginia advances to the Lake Elsinore regional final while the Aztecs need to defeat USC on Sunday to avoid elimination.

The game was scoreless after four innings but in the top of the fifth, San Diego State broke the tie when Alan Trejo hit a single near third base to bring home Danny Thorton and give the Aztecs a 1-0 lead but right after that, the Aztecs lost Steven Pallares to an injury. The hero from last night's game against UC Santa Barbara was lost for the game when he got a cut in his head when he came in contact with the cleats from a Virginia first baseman as he was trying to get back to first base. Virginia tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning at 1-1 when Joe McCarthy picked the perfect time to hit his first home run of season.

The game remained tied until the eighth inning when Virginia infielder Ernie Clement hit a RBI single to bring home a run to make it a 2-1 Cavaliers lead and after a Adam Haseley triple to right centerfield, Daniel Pinero got on base due to a fielding error by Adam Trejo which allowed Hasely to score the insurance run and put Virginia ahead for good.

The match-up between SDSU and Virginia was essentially a pitcher duel between San Diego State's Mark Syler and Virginia's Brandon Waddell. Seyler pitched a solid game going seven innings giving up five hits and striking out one Cavalier but he ran into trouble in the eight inning giving up those two runs and after that, he was pulled. However, Waddell had the better performance as he struck out five Aztec batters and only gave up one run.

For San Diego State, this is their first loss in since losing to Fresno State in the Mountain West tournament last week. They will face USC in the loser's bracket at 3 pm PST. If they win that game they will face Virginia again at 7pm PST. The Aztecs need to defeat USC and Virginia twice in order to win the Lake Elsinore region.
