More National Spotlight for the Spartans?

With two games already slated to be played in the national spotlight, could the Spartans get more?

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

It's already been announced that San Jose State will have two games aired on national television. There is the possibly to get three more on national television as well, according to Jimmy Durkin of the SpartanCentral news. This news was released after the Mountain West Conference announced the balance of its television packages.

The two games that are currently scheduled for prime time are the September 26 match-up against Fresno State, which will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. PT, and a November 6th game against BYU at 8:30 p.m. PT. Both of those games will be aired on CBSSN.

There is a bonus that schools get from the Mountain West TV contract if they are eligible. Unfortunately the two games noted above do not qualify SJSU for that bonus. However, there are two games (September 12th at Air Force and an October 17th home game against San Diego State) that could get SJSU the bonus. Since they are already scheduled to air on the ESPN networks, the Spartans could get $500,000. The only way they get this money is if those games are aired on either ESPN or ESPN 2. If it is on any of the other channels, there will be no bonus for the Spartans.

The specific channels will not be known until these dates get closer and during the TV window, and it also depends on how good San Jose State and their opponents are. The Spartans could use this bonus to help fund their cost of attendance which as of now has just one year of funding.
