The San Diego State Aztecs and New Mexico will face off on Sunday at 1 pm PST -- on the Mountain West Network -- to decide the Mountain West Tournament title and the auto-bid into the NCAA Baseball tournament.
The Aztecs had to win back-to back games on Saturday, a ten inning thriller against Fresno State and a 11-1 beat down of the aforementioned Lobos to set up the winner take all scenario against New Mexico. The Lobos clinched a spot in the title game on Saturday by defeating Fresno State 9-1 early Saturday after a marvelous performance by Carl Stajduhar and pitcher Carson Schneider. Stajduhar hit two homers, a double and scored three runs while Schneider struck out five batters.
The Aztecs, like the Lobos, have gotten to the title game because of their offense as they have hit 13 home runs in five games at Peccole Park. And of those 13 home runs the Aztecs have hit in this tournament, Seby Zavala has hit five of those home runs. He along with Aztec infielder Danny Sheehan has given the Aztecs offense it power in this tournament.
Aside from the lopsided 11-1 victory by San Diego State on Saturday, this should be a very competitive game featuring two of the best teams in the Mountain West Conference with a championship and a NCAA birth on the line. The Aztecs are looking to win their third consecutive Mountain West Tournament title while the Lobos are looking for their third tournament title in five years (and first since 2012). It should make for a entertaining game.
