Here is a recap of the day three games of the 2015 Mountain West Baseball tournament.
Game 7 - No. 2 San Diego State 8, No. 5 Air Force 2
SDSU's Seby Zavala went 2-4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs while Aztecs pitcher Mark Seyler went seven innings striking out two hitters and only giving up three hits as the Aztecs cruise past the Air Force Falcons 8-2 in the first game of the day. The loss eliminated the Falcons who finished the season at 23-29 while the Aztecs will keep on playing.
Zavala got the scoring started in the second inning with a solo home run and Danny Sheehan hit a two run homer in the third to make it 3-0 SDSU. Two batters latter, Spencer Thorton, hit a double in the right corner to score Zavala ,who was hit by a pitch, to make it 4-0 Aztecs.
A Ty France double in the fifth inning scored a run and Zavala got an RBI double to make it 6-0 SDSU. The Aztecs added insurance runs in the sixth and eighth innings respectively to make it 8-0. The Falcons were able to score two runs in the top of the ninth inning to prevent the shut out.
With the win, the Aztecs moved on to face Nevada in an elimination game for both teams.
Game 8 - No. 2 San Diego State 9, No. 1 Nevada 7
In the second straight elimination game for the Aztecs, they survived and will live to play another day. This time around, the Aztecs outlasted the top seeded Nevada Wolf Pack 9-7 in the second game of the day. It was a back and fourth contest where both teams offense was on display but it was the Aztecs offense that performed the best.
The star for the Aztecs again was junior outfield Seby Zavala. In this game, Zavala went 2-5 hitting two home runs and three RBIs (Zavala, in two games today, has gone 4 for 9 with three homer runs and five RBIs). Three other Aztecs hit home runs against the Wolf Pack which made Nevada pull their starter Evan McMahan after only two innings.
After the Wolf Pack cut the Aztecs lead to 8-7 after a Kewby Meyer double in the eighth, Zavala hit his second home run of the contest to give the Aztecs a 9-7 lead. The Wolf Pack had a chance to rally to either tie or win the game with bases loaded and Trent Brooks up at the plate but he struck out and the game ended.
The Wolf Pack are eliminated from the 2015 Mountain West tournament and they finish the season with a 41-15 record. They will wait and see if the are giving an at-large bid for the NCAA Baseball tournament on Monday. The Aztecs will play tomorrow at 3 pm PST when they will face the loser of the Fresno State/New Mexico game.
Game 9 - No. 3 Fresno State vs No. 4 New Mexico (PPD/Rain)
The game was postponed due to rain and will be played Saturday at 11 am PST.
