The Nevada Wolf Pack got one heck of a deal in landing former NBA head coach Eric Musselman. The two sides agreed to a five-year contract worth a total of $2 million, and the base annual salary is $300,000 per year with rest made up of media appearances.
That will be near the bottom of the Mountain West in compensation for a head coach. The average Mountain West basketball coach earns $639,688.
The deal is not official as the Nevada State Board of Regents need to approve the deal, and that group is set to meet at 3 p.m. PT on Thursday to approve the deal.
Musselman is a first-time college head coach, but to put this into perspective New Mexico head coach Craig Neal is one of the highest paid Mountain West coach with a salary of $750,000 per year after one year. Nevada is not a basketball rich school and has no real history in the sport.
The Reno-Gazette Journal obtained info on the contract, and below are just some of the details.
* Fringe benefits: Musselman will get a free loaned car, a membership to a country club, 12 season tickets per year in basketball and four season tickets per year to Nevada's other varsity sports.
* Championship bonuses: Musselman will get a $10,000 bonus if Nevada wins the MW regular-season title and $10,000 if Nevada wins the MW Tournament.
* Coach of year bonus: Musselman will get a $5,000 if he is named the MW coach of the year.
* NCAA Tournament bonuses: If Nevada reaches the NCAA Tournament, Musselman will get a $10,000 bonus; he will get an additional $10,000 for every NCAA Tournament win, a $25,000 bonus for playing in the Final Four and a $50,000 bonus for winning the NCAA championship.
* If he's fired: If Musselman is fired at any point in his contract, Nevada will owe him his base salary ($300,000 per season) for the remainder of his contract.
* If he leaves: If Musselman leaves Nevada before Sept. 1, 2016, he owes the Wolf Pack $500,000. If he leaves Nevada between Sept. 1, 2016 and Sept. 1, 2017, he owes Nevada $250,000. He also owes the Wolf Pack his base salary for the remainder of his contract if he leaves before his contract expires.
