2015 Mountain West football championship game: Open thread

The Falcons and the Aztecs clash with a chance for each to claim its first outright MWC title, so come follow along with us.

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

Championship Saturday is here.

This year's edition of the Mountain West football title game has taken on a new kind of tenor, since two first-time entrants -- not to mention two of the conference's original members, another first -- will have the opportunity to end long-standing title droughts.

Air Force surprised by emerging from a very competitive Mountain division, riding their traditional triple-option offensive attack and a retooled defense to earn a trip to San Diego. Though the Falcons have often been competitive over the years, a constant thorn in the side of conference powers, today's game is the program's first opportunity at an outright conference title since the last season of the 16-team WAC in 1998.

San Diego State, on the other hand, simply did what many pundits had anticipated all along, though the dominance with which they defeated their foes in the West has surprised some. The 3-3-5 defense, always a calling card of Rocky Long's teams, might be the program's best since its entry into the MWC 16 years ago, while the offense, led by Offensive Player of the Year Donnel Pumphrey, made up for in production whatever it might have lacked in excitement.

And though the Aztecs did claim a share of the conference title in 2012, the chance to clinch their first outright championship since 1986, at home, is one the program surely relishes.
