The Boise State Broncos defense took a hit as head coach Bryan Harsin announced that starting middle linebacker Tanner Vallejo did not travel to San Diego for the Poinsettia Bowl due to a violation of team rules.
Vallejo is the teams third-leading tackler with 57 on the year with eight of those for a loss and a sack. Starting in his place will likely be sophomore Joe Martarano, and if he starts this will be his third of the year.Despite being a backup he was nearly as productive as Vallejo with 48 total tackles.
Also not making the trip is defensive back Dylan Sumner-Garnder, but it should be noted that he was not going to play as he is still recovering from a broken ankle two months ago. His absence is a violation of team rules but we know more info is because this is a legal issue.
Chad Crippe of the Idaho Statesman through an open records search discovered that on Nov. 27 he was cited by Idaho State Police for a misdemeanor drug paraphernalia use or possession with intent to use. Those records also said that Sumner-Gardner missed a court appearance this past Friday.
