The Mountain West will not be represented in the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl as the BYU Cougars will be taking the spot this year, according to ESPN's Brett McMurphy. BYU had an option for 2015 and 2019 to play in either the Las Vegas Bowl or the Hawaii Bowl, and the bowl elected to go with the 9-3 Cougars over the Mountain West champion who could have as many wins if Air Force wins or a 10-win San Diego State team.
BYU has a history of filling out Sam Boyd Stadium when they went to the Las Vegas Bowl multiple years in a row when they were in the Mountain West, and selling tickets is likely a primary reason that the Cougars would be taken over anyone other than Boise State.
This means that when 2019 comes around that BYU will be locked into the Hawaii Bowl as long as they are bowl eligible and not in a New Year's Six bowl game.
The bowl process is slowly moving into place with this announcement, and it now means that the Poinsettia Bowl has the top selection of the bowl eligible Mountain West teams.
