Getting out muscled by a very physically gifted Boise State team was bad enough. When Cameron Coffman went down in the 3rd Quarter clutching his throwing shoulder it was worse. Coffman had been having a strong season completing 65.8% of his throws for a total of 1574 yards. So far this season he had been sacked a MWC leading 20 times before going down against the Broncos. At least he was not injured while standing in the pocket. In true Cowboy fashion, he landed awkwardly after diving head first for a 1st down.
The Wyoming training staff concluded that Coffman would be "doubtful" for the upcoming week. "All the x-rays have come back as negative." Explained head coach Craig Bohl, "The indication that we've gotten so far from reading the x-rays is that there's no broken bones, however he's very sore..."
To add salt to Wyoming's wounded, starting Z receiver Tanner Gentry is not expected back for at least 2 more weeks, so there is a very strong possibility that when Wyoming faces Utah State in Logan that they will be missing their number 1 WR and their starting senior quarterback.
This leaves the quarterbacking to red shirt freshman Nick Smith, who saw action earlier this season in a losing --and frankly-- unimpressive performance in a loss to Eastern Michigan. Forced into action because second string Josh Allen went down for the season, Smith went 3-13 for ZERO yards. It can be soundly argued that Smith will be more prepared to take on Utah State this week than he was to take on EMU, but one can not make an argument that he will be able to pick up the slack for Cam Coffman.
Bohl was able to express a somewhat positive spin regarding Nick Smith's approaching baptism by fire. "I think the fact the he (Nick Smith) will get all of the repetitions with the ones this week unless something changes with Cam, that's going to have an impact." Adding "It's always difficult to be the back up because 99% of the time your a back up."
Hold on to your ten gallon hats Wyoming Cowboys, you may be in for a long ride against an Aggie team the had a let down performance after soundly beating Boise State in the week prior to a loss to San Diego State.
