After a draft that had a lot of hope for some UNLV players but none were drafted, but within hours of it ending four players were taken as undrafted free agents. Defensive Lineman John Shirley signed with Oakland Raiders, Corner Kenneth Penny signed with the Cleveland Browns, wide receiver Devante Davis and offensive lineman Brett Boyko both signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.
At the end of the day, this actually turned out to be a good thing for the Rebels this draft weekend. Most thought at least Davis would be drafted, but he was not. There was also talk about Boyko being selected but he did not. They both ended up with Chip Kelly and his high powered offense. It will be very interesting to see how they are both used in that offense.
Some did wonder why Davis did not get drafted, here is a run down on him as for possibilities to why he fell. His injury may have hurt his status. His numbers did fall off his senior year compared to his junior year. He had less receptions, also had more than twice the amount receiving yards his junior year compared to his senior year. He also had 14 touchdowns his junior year only four touchdowns his senior year. He also had injuries, mainly his wrist his senior year and only played eight games. He does have a lot of speed though and can adjust to the ball very well.
Kenneth Penny being signed to Cleveland is a very interesting thing to have happen. With a player like that, it's is seen to probably be a good chance for him to make special teams. John Shirley going to Oakland will help a defense that is just not that good in the NFL.
Overall not a bad day for UNLV players moving on into the NFL.
