Then, after the game, fans discovered that senior linebacker Derek Largent would miss significant time after having his appendix removed Saturday at noon.
And now the U-T San Diego's Tod Leonard has tweeted that true freshman quarterback Nick Bawden will start in place of the injured Quinn Kaehler this Friday at Fresno State.
True freshman Nick Bawden will start in Kaehler's place. This is third straight season SDSU has to go to backup because of injuries.— Tod Leonard (@sdutleonard) September 29, 2014
According to Leonard, coach Rocky Long said that Kaehler sustained a sprained right shoulder against the Rebels.
Leonard also tweeted that Long said Bawden is more mobile and has a stronger arm than Kaehler, but he doesn't have the same level of experience as Kaehler.
Bawden was an ESPN three-star recruit coming out of Los Gatos High School in Los Gatos, California. ESPN ranked him the 34th-best QB in the class of 2014. Bawden signed with SDSU over FCS powerhouse Eastern Washington, but he also drew interest from Arkansas, Cal, Fresno State, Harvard, San Jose State, Utah and Washington. In his senior year, Bawden threw for 1,622 yards and 14 touchdowns. Check out some highlights.
This Friday's tilt against Fresno State is arguably SDSU's most important MWC west division game, as the Aztecs and Bulldogs were picked to finish first and second in the west division at the MWC media days in Las Vegas.
This is now the third season in a row that the Aztecs will start a backup quarterback due to injury.
