San Diego State Football: Linebacker Derek Largent has appendix removed, may miss 3-4 weeks

Like SDSU needed any more injury issues.

The good news? The San Diego State Aztecs opened up Mountain West play tonight with a convincing 34-17 win against the UNLV Rebels. The bad news? Senior linebacker Derek Largent could miss 3-4 weeks after having his appendix removed, according to the U-T San Diego's Stefanie Loh.

At the post-game press conference, head coach Rocky Long said that he found out about Largent's surgery today at 4 a.m.

"Found out last night, 4 a.m.," Long said. "He had an appendectomy. Had to be operated at noon today."

Long said he believes Largent may miss 3-4 weeks, but he hasn't spoken to s doctor yet.

"Three- or four-week deal," he said. "I shouldn't say that. I'm not a doctor and they haven't told me that."

Senior linebacker Josh Gavert started in Largent's place against UNLV.

Largent's absence is another blow to an SDSU team that already misses some of its leaders due to injury. Wide receiver Ezell Ruffin will be about for at least four more weeks with his broken collarbone, and linebacker Jake Fely has been out all year with a lingering neck injury. He may play at Fresno State next Saturday, however. Media and fans alike will know for sure after this Tuesday's SDSU football press conference.
