San Diego State men's basketball released its highly anticipated 2014-15 non-conference schedule today via Twitter. There are 14 games on the non-conference slate, seven of which come against fellow California schools. SDSU has won 41 games a row against other California schools, good for best in the state.
The schedule doesn't really feature any surprises (although I will say I wasn't expecting to see a game against Ball State any time soon...), as most big-game dates were already known. But Aztec fans can now mark the always-exciting City Championship game between SDSU and University of San Diego on their calendars for December 4. Another interesting part of the schedule: only two non-conference road games.
The schedule is a good prospect for the Aztecs in that most, if not all, of the games are winnable and certainly lean in SDSU’s favor based on recent results.
The Aztecs are 10-0 all time against UC Riverside, including last season’s 77-41 home victory. They’re also riding a 5-game winning streak against Utah, whom they haven’t played since 2011.
One of the games everyone’s looking forward to is the matchup with BYU in the EA Sports Maui Invitational. It will be the 72nd time that these former conference rivals will meet, with the Cougars holding a whopping 48-23 all-time series advantage.
SDSU has an 18-6 record and a 3-game winning streak against Cal State Northridge, who will be the Aztecs’ first regular-season foe. SDSU senior Aqeel Quinn knows the Matadors well; he transferred to the Mesa from CSUN two years ago.
