Today, the Associated Press released its preseason college football rankings. Surprise, surprise: 24 of the top 25 teams all belong to one of five conferences: ACC (3), Big 10 (4), Big 12 (3), Pac 12 (6) and the SEC (8). The one exception is Notre Dame, an independent school.
The Mountain West was shut out of the top 25, with three schools receiving votes in the AP poll. Boise State tied for 40th with 10 votes, and Nevada and Utah State tied for 45th with one vote.
However, MWC teams have early opportunities this season to beat ranked opponents and jump into the top 25 conversation. Boise State and Fresno State open their seasons against ranked opponents, with the Broncos traveling to No. 18 Ole Miss and the Bulldogs playing at No. 15 USC. Fresno State also hosts No. 22 Nebraska on September 13. San Diego State plays at No. 23 North Carolina on September 6. Wyoming will face two ranked opponents, No. 3 Oregon and No. 8 Michigan State, on the road in weeks three and five, respectively. San Jose State will travel to No. 6 Auburn on September 6. No. 25 Washington travels to Hawaii to play the Rainbow Warriors in week one. And New Mexico hosts No. 19 Arizona State on September 6.
Lots of opportunities for the conference to prove itself.
