MWC Top 50: No. 48 is New Mexico DE Brett Bowers

We are counting down the top 50 players in the Mountain West this season and are currently at the No. 48 spot.

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

This summer, the Mountain West Connection crew is counting down the top 50 players heading into the 2014 Mountain West season. The criteria is objective because a top 50 list could be considered who's the best is different per person, so this list will vary.

The No. 48 player on the list is New Mexico Lobos defensive end Brett Bowers. Seeing a New Mexico player, specifically a defender, in our top 50 list might seem odd. Just because a defensive unit is not very good does not mean that there are zero good players.

Phil Steele places Bowers on his preseason second team for the Mountain West. His main contribution on the field was getting to the backfield sacking the quarterback and stopping the run behind the line of scrimmage with nine tackles for loss and another six sacks. His tackle rate for a defensive end last year was not all that impressive with just 37 total tackles. He must improve off of that number if he wants to be an elite or even first team All-Mountain West player in 2014.

Here is the updated list of our top 50 countdown with the current selection in bold:
